After driving through Montreal and along the north shore of the St Lawrence River, we crossed to the south shore just before Quebec City. We found a Passport America campground - Camping Transit - just outside Levis and after hooking up, we used John's truck to drive to the ferry and take a 10 minute ride to the base of the cliffs on which the city of Quebec sits. The city was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain. Archeology has established ruins of the old Fort San Louis dating from 1538, making this the oldest city in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We walked around the Lower Town and looked at the shops and old buildings that have been restored in a beautiful way. Doorways and windows are adorned with flowers and it is a very picturesque place just full of history. After a couple of hours, we took the funicular up the face of the steep cliffside and took a look at the Chateau Frontenac - the grande dame of hotels - and then found a wonderful place for dinner - "Ancien Canadien" with historic recipes for food of the voyaguers.
