The Essenes, a monastic sect, lived here from 200BC to about 20AD when the Romans destroyed the colony. John the Baptist may have spent 2 years here with the monks in the desert. They had a small village of homes, storerooms, communal eating areas, scribing rooms and baths called mikvahs. They collected water that ran off the hills during flash floods and stored it in cisterns.
