On the other side of the Mingas Mountains is the town of Jerome. It grew after large copper deposits were discovered in the mountain it is built on. At one time, enough was mined to give each person in the US 15 pounds of copper. The mountain is honeycombed with now abandoned tunnels. After the copper was mined out, Jerome became almost a ghost town, with some of the derelict buildings sliding down the side of the hill.
